David Lozano and Raul Trevino wrote Crystal City 1969 in 2009, a production which The Dallas Morning News called the “Best New Play” of 2009. Residents from Crystal City learned of its success by word of mouth, but individuals who contributed to the school walkouts that permanently transformed the social and political structure in Crystal City found Dallas too far to travel to enjoy the play. Thank you Dr. Romo for your article and all your pictures I lived during that time, not there but in a town close by. Lots of memories of a time in history and the people that help change it.
Excellent article. Thank you Dr. Romo for your well scripted article along with the pictures. I look forward to your articles every month as you take me down memory lane of the time in history I lived. Love you and Harriett lots!
I attended the Saturday 8pm performance with Q&A afterwards with Dr. Gutierrez and 4 Crystal City High School students who were portrayed in the play. It was a POWERFUL experience! Our communities needs more of this — I would love to see our San Antonio High School students attending these performances.
We took friends with us to see Cara Mia’s production of CRYSTAL CITY 1969 when it played in Dallas, and we thought it was terrific. It was a much-needed reminder of how much change we in Texas have seen, what it took to achieve that change, and how much more remains to be done. I’m glad to know it was such a hit in SA, where the people who had lived it could come to see it. And I’m so pleased that my longtime friend Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez was there supporting all five performances!
Thank you for this, MAYO was instrumental in establishing the premise for MEChA, a great history told!!!
